San Miguel de Allende What to Do

What to do in San Miguel de Allende

Last December I went with one of my friends to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato, Mexico

San Miguel de Allende is a proclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site attracting thousands of tourists and new residents from abroad every year. (2008) It was chosen for its well- preserved Baroque colonial architecture and its role in the Mexican War of Independence.

And last year was named the Best City in the world by travelers at the Travel + Leisure Magazine “World’s Best Awards for 2017”.

San Miguel is a beautiful colonial city with charming streets, stunning architecture, narrow stoned streets full of high hills, churches, parks, and breathtaking views.

I spend there only 3 days and I didn’t visit a huge part of my agenda, but I loved and enjoyed every second.

Mexican Colonials Cities have history, they have old personality and that charming and calm atmosphere that I used to feel at my grandma house.

San Miguel was packed. We didn’t make any reservations, and we plan our agenda in the taxi going from Queretaro to SMA. Unfortunately, most of the activities and restaurants didn’t have open spaces until 7 days later, so one very important thing if you travel on a high season is to book most of the activities before your trip.

These are my recommendations of what to do if you decide to visit San Miguel in High Season:

1.- Don’t forget your walking shoes, two pairs will be better. It is better to walk around because the traffic is crazy and there are no traffic lights, you will need to stop in every corner and people always go first. There are a lot of art crafts stores and pretty things to see in every street.

2.- Define where to eat at least 45 minutes before you are hungry because that is the regular waiting time (In a high season like December). All restaurants around in downtown area are good, if you want to have a lovely view of the city then take a taxi and go to “El Palomar” hotel and go to their Restaurant: Antonia. For breakfast Casa Carly or Los Milagros.

3.- The city is full of beautiful churches, visit everyone that you can, San Miguel Arcangel Cathedral is the landmark of the city, you will notice it as soon as you arrive at the main central square. Baroque style and is pink!

4.- Weddings, you will see weddings every day and in every church and they go around the main square with live music like mariachis or tambora and they offer tequila and flowers to the people, just follow the group and enjoy the moment.

5.- Casa de Allende Museum is at one side of the Cathedral. And like 5 blocks from here there is the Popular Toy Museum called “La Esquina” it has a beautiful view of the city and have a huge exhibition of Mexican Toys from the past and also present toys that people in small towns handmade for their kids.

San Miguel does not have an airport you will fly to Queretaro or Guanajuato city and from there take a taxi or a shuttle.

Edzna Archaeological Mayan Site Campeche

There some more like Calakmul, Becan, Chicanna but in my short vacation, I just visited Edzna Archaeological Mayan Site Campeche.

Edzna archaeological Mayan site Campeche, is like an hour from Campeche city by car.

I took a short vacation in Campeche city. In my last day, after I walked around the hotel I asked to a person what else can I visit on this day, he said you need to go to Edzna.  I reply that there is no time, I’m going back tomorrow, I didn’t plan to go to Edzna, I didn’t make reservations with a tour agency and didn’t get up early to take the bus tour offered from the central park of the city. Then he said, you can go today and he gave me the instructions on how local people go to this site.

I walked to the local market, and there after asking to 3 or 5 persons, I took the Edzna “combi” or van, I paid like 7.50 pesos. The van was full and stop in every house, street and town, but was fun and I enjoy the music, the talk and the charming of the people around me.

If you don’t like to be in a packed van, I recommend you to take a tour bus.

When you arrive to Edzna you see a large palapa where the person in charge of the area explain to you about some of the objects that were there and gave you the map of the archaeological site.

I arrived around noon and the day was very sunny, humid and hot, so please use light clothe, cap or hat and a lot of sunblock.

Edzna buildings are enormous, principal building is like 40 metros height. I will write a little more in a few days ok? come back please.
